Materials Science and Engineering (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering program aims to develop an understanding of the structure, properties, processing, and service behavior of engineering materials, including metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite materials. This understanding fosters both the development of new materials and the improvement of existing materials in order to optimize manufactured products.

The Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering program aims to develop an understanding of the structure, properties, processing, and service behavior of engineering materials, including metallic, ceramic, polymeric, and composite materials. This understanding fosters both the development of new materials and the improvement of existing materials in order to optimize manufactured products.

Laboratory experience is an important part of the program and emphasizes microstructural characterization using modern analytical techniques, such as optical and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, materials processing, determination of the physical and mechanical behavior of materials, and materials and process selection.

Program Overview

Students will learn the fundamentals of creating new materials and developing processes to improve existing materials, building on skills to make innovations in materials science and engineering for improved materials and solutions to technological, societal, and environmental problems.

The B.S. in materials science and engineering degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The current educational objectives of the undergraduate program in materials science and engineering is embodied in the following statements: 

  • Graduates will meet the expectations of employers of materials science engineers. 
  • Graduates will be prepared to pursue advanced study if they so desire.
  • Graduates will be prepared to assume/undertake leadership roles in their communities and/or professions.
