Distinguished Illinois Tech Professor Receives Prestigious Foreign Fellowship

A widely published distinguished professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology was named a of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering.

Mohammad Shahidehpour was given the honor during the society’s 11th annual conference, which took place in May 2023 in Beijing. According to the society’s website, fellowships are given to “experts and scholars who have made great contributions and outstanding achievements in the field of electrical engineering science and technology.†Since 2018—the first year foreign members were awarded fellowships—only 39 foreign individuals have received the honor, which is the highest academic award a member can receive.

Shahidehpour joined Illinois Tech in 1983 and is presently a University Distinguished Professor, the Galvin Chair Professor of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, the director of the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation, and the associate director of the Wanger Institute for Sustainability and Energy Research.

Shahidehpour has co-authored six books and 900 papers on electric power system operation and planning, and was the recipient of six best paper awards for his Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers publications. Additionally, his United States Department of Energy project on perfect power systems has converted the entire Illinois Tech campus to an islandable microgrid. 

Shahidehpour is also a fellow of IEEE, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, and an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.
