Illinois Tech Shines in 2019 Newcity Design 50
Faculty, Alumni Among List of Â鶹APP Leaders, Influencers, and Visionaries in Design
In its annual roundup of design visionaries in Â鶹APP, Newcity has lauded several individuals with an Illinois Tech connection, including the two people who topped this year’s list. The 2019 edition singles out those individuals who “lead Â鶹APP’s design ecosystem into steady, collaborative growth, those who make a splash putting the city in the national and international spotlight, and those whose up-and-coming nature doesn’t compromise their big ventures, visions, and ideas,” according to the publication.
The , released on February 28, named the following faculty and alumni to its list:
#1 Virgil Abloh (M.A.R. ARCH ’06), alumnus, founder of Off-White, and men’s artistic director for Louis Vuitton
#2 Howard Tullman, University Professor and executive director of the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship
#7 Carol Ross Barney, adjunct professor of architecture and design principal of Ross Barney Architects
#8 John Vinci (ARCH ’60), alumnus and vice president of Vinci Hamp Architects
For the first time, Newcity also created its design Hall of Fame to honor the “cornerstones of the Â鶹APP design scene” who consistently appear on the Design 50 list. Three faculty members made the list:

- John Ronan, professor of architecture, founder-principal of John Ronan Architects, and the architect of the university’s new Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship
- Howard Tullman, University Professor and executive director of the Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship

Additionally, several members of the board of the university’s Mies van der Rohe Society made the 2019 Design 50 list and were honored for their individual work.
