Balancing Technological Advancement with Environmental Responsibility
With an interest in solving real-world challenges, Sneha Patil has a passion for understanding how materials, especially polymers, behave and interact in various environments.
She says she was drawn to Illinois Institute of Technology’s high-quality faculty in these areas and the university’s reputation for excellence in STEM research, innovation, and education.
“I was particularly drawn to the focus on interdisciplinary learning and research, with opportunities for hands-on projects through programs like IPRO [Interprofessional Projects Program],” she says.
As a student in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Sneha has pursued a range of opportunities, including participating in research on carbon dioxide reduction and volunteering with local environmental organizations.
She has taken advantage of Illinois Tech’s partnership with Pathway for Patient Health through the (QSE) program, which offers a unique opportunity to integrate academic learning with professional development through taking courses, receiving mentorship, and accessing internship opportunities.
“My experience with QSE has been enriching. I took advantage of both the learning and mentorship opportunities, working closely with industry professionals to understand how theoretical knowledge is applied in real-world scenarios. I particularly enjoyed the mentorship aspect, where I received guidance on career planning and how to approach complex problems in chemical engineering,” she says.
Sneha aims to work in areas that create solutions that balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
She says her experience in chemical engineering has given her a unique perspective on how to address some of the most pressing global challenges and that it offers opportunities to contribute to sustainable practices, particularly in waste management and the development of eco-friendly materials.
“I believe that engineering solutions can play a crucial role in addressing the challenges of climate change, and I aspire to be part of the movement that drives these solutions,” says Sneha. “I am excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in this field.”
