Providing unique educational opportunities in the area of diabetes is essential to the goals of the Engineering Center for Diabetes Research and Education (ECDRE) and Illinois Institute of Technology. The National Science Foundation-supported Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and Research Experience for Teachers (RET) programs have been very successful in attracting undergraduate students for summer internships on diabetes-related research and disseminating educational tools to grades 5-12 science courses to support biology and nutrition themes and contributing to enhancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. ECDRE has developed a simulator that can be used for scholastic and community education for illustrating the dynamic variations in blood glucose concentration in response to food, insulin, and physical activity, and it has been gamified for use with high school students. ECDRE engages in outreach activities by establishing partnerships with community colleges and high schools for broadening participation in STEM areas. ECDRE also offers summer research internships to high school students.
