The Department of Information Technology and Management offers seven undergraduate and nine graduate specializations that allow ITM students to concentrate their studies in an area of interest to their career goals. The specializations are career-focused, and they can make our ITM graduates more qualified for future employment.

The data management specialization focuses on the design, development, and administration of traditional and internet-based data management.

The IT entrepreneurship and management specialization is designed to help students and experienced information technology professionals become entrepreneurs, innovators, managers, and leaders.

Coursework will enhance your technology skills; prepare you for leadership and management positions with a better understanding of how to identify business opportunities; develop strategies to capitalize on those opportunities; and build and grow new ventures.

The networking and communications specialization focuses on network applications and management including the use and configuration of network applications, current application protocols and application technologies, maintenance and administration of servers and associated networks using a contemporary industry-standard proprietary operating system. Telecomm over data networks and administration topics and concepts of IT orchestration, automation, monitoring, and metric collection, including hardware requirements, software compatibility, system installation, configuration and options, and post-installation topics, administrative and technical practices required for system security, process management, performance monitoring and tuning, storage management, back-up and restoration of data, disaster recovery and prevention, vulnerabilities of networks of computers including the networks themselves, operating systems, important applications and security.

The software development specialization prepares our graduates to research, create, test, and evaluate software and operating systems using a blend of technology and management.

It is designed to help students and experienced information technology professionals become software developers, managers, and leaders. Coursework will enhance your technology skills, and prepare you for leadership and management with a better understanding of software development.

The system administration specialization is designed to help students and experienced information technology professionals become successful system administration managers and leaders.

Coursework in programming, security, Linux, Unix, Microsoft, and systems administration will enhance your technology skills and prepare you for leadership and management positions in interconnecting systems and platforms.

The systems security specialization focuses on application, data, and network security, and the management of information technology security including access control systems and methodology, business continuity and disaster recovery planning, identity management, encryption services and common hacking techniques, encryption methods, cryptography law and security architecture, ethical hacking, penetration testing, and detection of malicious probes, legal issues in information system security, ethics, computer operations security, physical security and security architecture. Student will learn about viruses, worms, and other attack mechanisms, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures, network security protocols, encryption, identity and authentication, scanning, firewalls, security tools, server configuration, system-level firewalls, file system security, logging, anti-virus and anti-spyware measures, and variety of other security issues. 

The web design and application development specialization is designed to help students and experienced information technology professionals become web designers, web application developers, managers, and leaders.

Coursework will enhance your technology skills, prepare you for leadership and management roles, and provide a better understanding of web design and online application development.

This specialization focuses on application, data, and network security. It also delves into the management of cybersecurity, including cybersecurity technologies and cybersecurity management, as well as cyber analytics, cyber forensics, the audit process, information technology governance, protection of information assets, and business continuity and disaster recovery. Also included is key foundational knowledge in networking, operating systems, and programming.

The data analytics and management specialization is designed to help students and experienced information technology professionals become better data managers.

This specialization covers the application of industry standard frameworks to the management of information technology infrastructure, development and operations, server and network management, data network technologies, protocols, network components, object-oriented programming concepts, and the necessary skills to administer these systems. Smart technology uses devices such as sensors and other appliances connected to the internet of things that can be remotely monitored, controlled, or accessed, and provide services that respond to the perceived needs of the users. This specialization includes hands-on development of several stand-alone embedded applications using development tools such as compilers, simulators, and evaluation boards; intelligent device application development; proprietary enterprise and open-source technologies on media devices, mobile, and robotic platforms; and includes the design and development on simulated and real smart devices including smartphones, tablets, sensors, actuators, drones, and robots.
