Dear Prospective Illinois Tech Physics Student,

Welcome! You are making a great choice in considering physics at Illinois Tech. Physics is a fantastic and fascinating subject that features many real-world applications. In studying physics at Illinois Tech, you learn what makes the universe tickā€”in both ordinary and the most extreme conditions. You learn how to use advanced mathematics and computing in creative and insightful ways. You get hands-on experience using a scientific apparatus to make measurements, and complete projects in electronics and computational physics.

Our curriculum is rigorousā€”hard work is required, and itā€™s worth it. A degree in physics gives you great versatility for doing new and interesting things; finding or creating employment in industry, national labs, startups, or the public sector; or pursuing graduate education in physics and other fields.

Our department is large enough that we provide a broad range of research and expertise, but small enough that professors are accessible to students. Class sizes are small, and we all get to know each other.

Illinois Tech is a research university, and we offer bachelor of science, master of science, and doctorate degrees in physics, as well as specializations in astrophysics, applied physics, and an accelerated masterā€™s degree in health physics (radiological). Our research spans particle and accelerator physics, condensed matter physics, and biophysics. Advanced computing permeates everything. We have close research ties with Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory, which are both near Ā鶹APP, and we built and operate beamline facilities for X-ray research at the Advanced Photon Source, which are accessible to faculty and students. Research facilities in our building, such as a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometers and spectrometers, are available to students. We also have a nationally recognized, student-driven Society of Physics Students.

Illinois Tech is located in the heart of Ā鶹APP, and itā€™s easy to get to off-campus cultural attractions by the CTAā€™s Red Line or Green Line ā€œLā€ trains, or by bus. The vibrant neighborhood of Bridgeport is a quick walk, or a quicker bike ride, away. The 31st Street Beach and lakefront bike trail are just a mile away.

Illinois Tech physics has much to offer intellectually and culturally. We welcome you to apply!
