Honorary Degrees

2024 Illinois Tech honorary degree recipients Maurice Cox and David Hovey Sr.

Each year, the Office of the Provost solicits nominations for honorary doctorate degree recipients who will be honored during the annual Commencement ceremony.

The honorary doctorates are intended to honor remarkable individuals who will inspire our students, represent diversity and inclusion, and who may have some likelihood of engaging with our community.

To make a nomination, please consider the following criteria:

  • The nominee has made significant contributions to cultural, scientific, or social development. Contributions may be in scholarship, creative arts, research, learned professions, public service, public health, or business and industry.
  • The nominee has a sustained reputation over time in national/international arenas.
  • The nominee has a reasonable likelihood of interacting with all or a segment of the university community either before or after receiving their honorary degree.
  • A member of the Illinois Tech Board of Trustees may be awarded an honorary degree, provided the trustee has served as a member of the board for a significant period of time
  • Only under extraordinary circumstances should an honorary degree be awarded to an active member of Illinois Tech’s faculty, administration, or staff.
