Admitted to Alternate Major

About Your Admission Decision

Applicants can receive one of four admission decisions:

  1. Direct admission into your first- or second-choice degree program University admission: Students who are granted admission into the university, but not their first- or second-choice degree program, may choose to enroll in our Discover+ (undecided) program and reapply to their preferred major in their second year. They may also choose to accept direct admission in their first year into one of the majors offered in their decision email.

  2. Acceptance into Ascend, Illinois Tech's Transfer Pathway program: Select students will be invited to participate in Ascend, a transfer pathway program, with one of our partner institutions, designed to enable promising students to transfer into Illinois Tech after taking one- to two years of college-level coursework. Students who maintain a 3.0 GPA and earn a “B” or higher in Calculus-level math may qualify for guaranteed admission. Learn More

  3. Request for additional information: If the admission committee is unable to issue a decision based on the application materials you submitted, they may request that you submit additional information such as your transcript from the first semester of your senior year or a letter of recommendation. You will be issued an admission decision within 2 weeks of submitting the requested information.

  4. Deny/Not admitted:  Everyone’s college journey is different, and if you aren't admitted the first time you apply, we invite you to take some courses at your local community college and reapply as a transfer student in future terms. Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)

Discover+ is Illinois Tech’s undecided pathway program that enables students to kickstart their college career at Illinois Tech by exploring different majors while completing core curriculum requirements. Learn More.

The most common reason a student is not admitted to their first-choice major is due to academic performance in math or science courses. Our engineering and computing programs are rigorous and require proficiency in calculus-level coursework in foundational courses within the program. Illinois Tech typically requires a B or higher in math and science courses.

If your first-choice major is in the Armour College of Engineering or College of Computing, you may be reconsidered for your first-choice major if:

  • You email your admission counselor after requesting that a school official submits an updated mid-year or final transcript showing academic performance of a B or higher in pre-calculus, calculus, or physics
  • You take the ALEKS Math Placement exam and earn a score of 80 or above
  • You earn college credit for college-level calculus (MATH 151) through transfer, AP, IB, or GCE A-level credit
  • You successfully complete MATH 151 during your first year at Illinois Tech

Architecture is one of Illinois Tech’s most selective academic programs. If you were not admitted to the Architecture program, we strongly recommend you enroll in an Architecture program at one of Illinois Tech’s transfer pathway partners to qualify for guaranteed admission to Architecture as a transfer student.

If you were admitted as a Discover+ student, you may work directly with Academic Affairs and the College of Architecture to declare your major in Architecture after completing your first semester at Illinois Tech. Please note that due to studio requirements in the Architecture curriculum, you may need to complete an additional one to two semesters of coursework to meet B.Arch. degree requirements.

The most common reason a student is not admitted to Biology, Chemistry, or Physics is due to academic performance in honors and AP/IB/GCE/college-level coursework. If you earned all As and Bs in honors and AP/IB/GCE/college-level coursework during your senior year and would like to be reconsidered for admission to one of these programs, please email your admission counselor after requesting your school official to submit an updated official transcript with your mid-year or final grades.

Students may submit a change of major request with Academic Affairs for Biology, Chemistry, or Physics upon completing one semester at Illinois Tech in good academic standing.

Prior to the start of your first semester at Illinois Tech, you may submit a change of major request by emailing your Illinois Tech admission counselor.

Students may declare their major in the following programs with no additional requirements:
